Abstract

658,918. Wrenches. BERGOVIST, A. T. July 5, 1949, No. 17738. [Class 61(iii)] [Also in Group XXV] A fastening device for securing telescopic members together (see Group XXV) is shown applied to a pipe wrench to render the jaws thereof adjustable. The moving jaw 17 is pivotally mounted on the .operating rod 1 which carries a wedge 3 for engagement in a tapered slot in a sleeve 5 adapted to be expanded into binding engagement with the walls of a bore in the handle 2 by inward force on the rod 1. A spring 19 acting between a flange 18 on the rod 1 and the sleeve 5 urges the parts to the locking position. A tube 7 abuts the sleeve and may be displaced to move the sleeve out of engagement with the wedge by rotating the jaw 17 until a part near the pivot engages the edge of the tube. In this position the rod is free and may be displaced to the adjusted position. The binding action of the sleeve resists pressure on the pivot 20 acting towards the handle 2.
