Abstract
658,695. Dividing by fusion. LINDE AIR AIR PRODUCTS, CO. April 7, 1949, No. 9537. Convention date, May 1, 1948. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XI] Cylindrical ferrous bodies are flame-desurfaced by passage through a frusto-conical stream of oxygen S directed upon an annular zone D which is heated to the temperature at which it ignites in oxygen. The work W, Fig. 1, is driven and guided by grooved rolls 20 through a burner head H having outer and inner rings of orifices 44, 45, Fig. 2, on two frusto-conical gas burners 32, 34 spaced apart to provide preheating zones in front of and behind the ignition zone. A conical passage 36 between the burners supplies oxygen and has a series of wedges 52 arranged to give an expansion ratio up to 2.5 to 1 and terminating upstream of the outlet end to provide a continuous annular orifice 55. A collar 23 supporting the head H is mounted by struts 24 on an annular conduit 25, Fig. 1, which acts as a distributing chamber for the cutting oxygen from a supply pipe 0 to a series of pipes 30 connected to the passage 36 between the wedges 52. Groups of pipes 48, 50 for the inner and outer burners respectively pass through slots 60, 61 in a ring 56 attached to the end of the head H and are preferably connected to separate supply sources of a mixture of oxygen and fuel gas for the outer burner and to commercially pure fuel gas or a mixture of fuel gas and a combustion supporting gas for the inner burner. The head H together with the annular conduit 25 is mounted on a floating panel 10 which compensates for deviation from straightness of the work, and a split guide bell may also be fitted forward of the head H to protect the burners. A water spray may be provided to chill the slag and deflect it away from the feed rollers. Wedges 52 may be omitted from the oxygen passage and the conical walls between the burners may be diverged to give the equivalent expansion ratio.
