A substantially cylindrical shell 13, Fig. 2, containing an electric lamp socket 15 is supported. by an insulating disc 23 on an abutment 32 around a large neck opening 30 in a hollow lamp base 29 accommodating electric supply wires 19, and is secured by fastening means to the neck of the lamp base. Said fastening means may comprise a screw threaded ring 31 secured to the neck, and on which is screwed a threaded . ring 36 which during assembly is passed over a flange 24 at the lower end of the shell 13. A split ring 37 is then applied above the flange 24 so that when the ring 35 is screwed on to the ring 31 the split ring 37 prevents the flange 36 from passing the flange 24. The ring 31 may be omitted, the neck being formed with screw threads. Alternatively the shell 13, Fig. 7, may be provided with an annular shoulder 46 and a screw-threaded skirt 47 for engaging the screwed ring 31. An additional lamp socket 53 may be supported within the lamp base by a bracket 51 .riveted to the insulating disc 23, switching means enabling the lower lamp 54 to be energized instead of the upper for use as a night lamp. In a further construction external screw threads are provided on the lower end of the shell 13 for engagement with internal threads in the neck opening 30. Fig. 10 shows a further alternative fastening means in which a ring 66, secured in the lamp base by external projections 68, is provided with internal detent projections 69 for engaging detent openings 65 circumferentially arranged around the shell 13.
