Abstract

657,386. Barrel locks. OROQUIETA, J. V. Feb. 21, 1949, No. 4671. Convention date, Jan. 20. [Class 44] A barrel lock, shown in sections in Figs. 5 and 6, comprises a cylinder c having a transverse slot 7 accommodating a set of plate tumblers e, Fig. 1, having openings 15 therein to receive a key f, key guides 16, 17 being formed in the openings in such a manner that the set of tumblers provides two key-ways with identical rows of keyguides but in opposite directions from each respective key-hole so that the key may be inserted from one side of the lock to co-operate with one set of key-guides and from the other side to co-operate with the other set. The two key-ways are disposed parallel to each other and are formed by the upper parts of a single Y-shaped keyway accessible through a key-hole 10, Fig, 9, at each side. The key f is bent slightly in its depth so that when inserted from one side it, passes through the branch 10<1> of the Y-shaped opening 10 to co-operate with the key-guides 16 and when inserted from the other side it passes through the branch 10<11> to co-operate with the key guides 17. Each tumbler is urged by the hooked end 18<1>, Figs 5 and 6, of a spring-loaded lever 18 to engage the lower end 9 in a slot 5 in the lock body d. Insertion of the key from either side aligns the ends of the tumblers with the surface of the cylinder so that the cylinder may be turned, an arm 3 engaging in recesses 2<1> of the bolt tail 2 to withdraw or project the bolt. The spring- loaded levers 18 may be replaced by a single spring-loaded block bearing down on all the tumblers. A catch, pivoted on one side of the lock body may be adapted to retain a key in the lock to prevent operation of the lock from the other side.
