Abstract
657,385. Barrel locks. OROQUIETA, J. V. Feb. 21, 1949, No. 4670. Convention date, Jan. 20. [Class 44] In a lock of the barrel type the rotating cylinder 3 is provided with a transverse slot 7 in which are positioned a plurality of independent plate tumblers 9 having substantially central apertures 10 together forming a key-way symmetrical in dimensions about the central plane of the cylinder so that the tumblers may be operated by the same key from either side. In the form of Figs. 2 and 3 each tumbler is acted upon by a locking catch member 14 carried on the end of a lever 12 and urged by a spring 15 to engage in the end of the slot 7 in the cylinder and to drive the lower end of the tumbler into locking engagement with a slot 11 in the body part 2. Insertion of the correct key aligns the ends of the tumblers with the surface of the cylinder which may then be turned to cause a projection 5 to encage a part of the bolt for withdrawal. In the form of Fig. 3 the individual catches are replaced by a common sliding catch 18 bearing on the tumblers under the influence of a spring 20.
