Abstract
937,759. Key locks. C. GARCIA. Feb. 3, 1960, No.3775/60. Class 44. A tumbler lock comprises a housing 1, a body 2 having bolt means 8, 8<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, formed integrally therewith or attached thereto and slidable in the housing for movement between locking and unlocking positions, a casing 5 arranged in the housing and containing tumblers 13 which are resiliently supported and are disposed transversely to the direction of sliding of the body for movement between locking positions in which they engage recesses 9, 9<SP>1</SP> in the body and unlocking positions in which they are disengaged from the body, the casing having key holes on opposite sides thereof and each tumbler being formed with recesses 17, 17<SP>1</SP> on opposite side edges thereof for reception of a key inserted through either key-hole to disengage the tumblers from the body so as to allow sliding movement of the body. The casing 5 is fixed in relation to the housing 1. The tumblers are resiliently supported by means of two helical springs which pass through perforations 20 in the tumblers. The key has horizontal steps 19<SP>1</SP> on its bit to engage the recess 17 or 17<SP>1</SP> and its engagement is facilitated by providing each recess with an enlarged mouth. The withdrawal of the bolt means to unlocking position is carried out by means of one or other of two knobs 27 each having a pin 28 which engages a recess 10 in the body 2, the knobs rotating on cylindrical extensions 7 of the casing 5 through which the key must be passed to engage the recesses in the tumblers. The cylinders 7 are hollow and each has two of the keyholes, one on each end wall, arranged so that after the key is passed through the first keyhole it must be rotated 90 degrees before it can be passed through the second keyhole to engage the tumblers. If the key is inserted into the lock from one side 180 degrees rotated from its unlocking position, it prevents operation of the lock from the other side.
