Abstract
657,236. Endless-belt conveyers. HUWOOD MINING MACHINERY, Ltd., and BAINBRIDGE, F. Feb. 25, 1949, No. 5256. [Class 78 (i)] In a belt conveyer of the kind having a framework built-up of sections of sheet-like form which cover the lower run of the belt and carry rollers for supporting the upper run and which at their ends are associated with supports which bear rollers for supporting the lower run, the framework is built-up of a plurality of substantially rectangular sheets of less width than the conveyer and of cradle devices disposed transversely of the belt, the sheets being mounted side-byside on the cradles to cover the width of the lower belt rim and being fitted with stiffening means along each longitudinal edge, the cradle devices being provided with removable cross-members to support the sheets at the ends, and the sheets and cradles being adapted for the mounting fixedly in position thereon respectively of idler rollers for supporting the upper run of the conveyer and of idler rollers for supporting the lower run. As shown, the return run of the belt is covered by pairs of sheets 1, 2 stiffened at their sides by lengths of tubing 4, 5 and welded at their ends to bars 7 projecting at each side at 8, 9. Intermediate the ends of the sheets 1, 2 are bars 22 welded in recesses in the tubing and having portions 23 projecting beyond the sides of the sheets. The cradles 13 are connected in pairs by tubes 14 and are each slotted at 15 to receive the ends of a cross-bar 16 stiffened by a piece of tubing 17. The depth of the slots 15 is such that a bar 16 may be applied to a pair of cradles by inserting it at one end through the slot 15 of one cradle, moving it back a little to enter its other end into the slot 15 of the other cradle and then lowering the bar in the slots 15 to allow projections 18 on its underside to enter sockets 19 welded to the inner side of the cradles. Rollers 21 for supporting the lower belt run are supported by cross-members 20 which span the tubes 14. To assemble the structure, the cradles are laid along the conveyer site and the lower run of the belt laid on the rollers 21. The cross-bars 16 are now mounted on the cradles and these latter then adjusted so as to be at slightly less distance apart than the length of the sheets 1, 2 so that the latter may be rested on their ends on the cross-bars. A sheet 2 on the far side of the conveyer is first laid on the cross-bars of two adjacent cradles and back a little from the far end thereof and then slid along until the projections 8 on the sheet slip into the upper part of the slot 15 of adjacent cradles. The near side of the sheet is then laid on the bars 16 a little way back from the near ends of the cradles and then slid towards those ends to bring the projections 8 into the adjacent slots 15. After the pairs of sheets have been assembled, frames 25 carrying idlers 26 are secured by bolts 24 to the projections 23 on the bars 22.
