Abstract

656,810. Cable and wire, terminals. AIRCRAFT-MARINE PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 18, 1948, No. 27009. Convention date, Oct. 16, 1947. [Class 38 (i)] A cable connector 8 has a malleable ferrous metal body which is coated with a softer corrosion - resistant metal, which may be an amalgam, between its solidus and liquidus states. The steel has preferably a low carbon content and copper may be used to coat the steel body, the amalgam being applied directly to the copper, as described in Specification 610,328. Tin can be added to a mercury layer on the copper coating to form an amalgam therewith but in insufficient quantity to absorb all the mercury so that some mercury is free to flow into any crevices left when the connector is crimped on to a cable 18. Preferably the connector is of the form described in Specification 650,096 and has ears 12, 14, 16 attached to a ferrule portion 10 of the connector. The ears 12, 16 are turned over to pierce the cable insulation 22 and engage the cable conductor 20, the ear 14 being constrained to encircle the cable insulation by shaped dies of the kind described in Specification 650,096, Figs. 4 to 7 (not shown). The connectors can be provided in the form of strips of shaped blanks, as described in Specifications 601,068, [Group XXII], and 656,029.
