Abstract

A pesticidal composition comprises a pesticide associated with a substance yielding ammonia and a water-insoluble organic acid, which is obtained by the joint polymerization of an unsaturated carboxylic acid with a polymerizable compound containing the group C=CH2 and which has adherent properties, and is capable of forming a water soluble ammonium salt which splits up into the free acid and ammonia when an aqueous solution of the salt is dried, or with a reaction product of such a water-insoluble acid with a substance yielding ammonia. Specified substances yielding ammonia are ammonium salts, e.g. ammonium carbonate, aqueous solutions of ammonia, and mixtures of alkali metal carbonates or bicarbonates with ammonium salts of strong acids, e.g. sodium carbonate or bicarbonate and ammonium chloride. Suitable organic acids are copolymers obtained by the joint polymerization of an unsaturated carboxylic acid, e.g. acrylic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, cinnamic acid and crotonic acid with a compound ontaining the group C=CH2, e.g. styrene, acrylic acid esters and vinyl esters, e.g. vinyl chloride or acetate. Such copolymers may be obtained by the processes of Specifications 376,479 and 495,337, (Group IVa). Specified pesticides are copper oxychloride, copper phosphate, lead arsenate, hexachlorocylohexane, D.D.T., sulphur, 3 : 6-dinitro-monochlorocarbazole, 2 : 4-dinitro-thiocyanobenzene, tetramethyl thiuram mono- or di-sulphide. The compositions may be in the form of a dry powder, or a paste, and may be prepared by mixing the components in any order of succession. Inert carriers such as kaolin, gypsum, bentonite and kieselguhr; adhesives such as casein, glue or gelatin; and other materials such as sulphite cellulose waste liquor, cellulose derivatives, e.g. methyl cellulose, silica gel and mineral oils may also be present. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also as substances yielding ammonia, easily volatile weak bases, e.g. the alkylamines such as methylamine, dimethylamine and ethylamine. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
