Abstract
655,537. Extruding carbon electrodes &c. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. (Loraut, H.). Dec. 17, 1948, No. 32662. [Class 87 (ii)] Granular material, e.g. carbon and a binder, is fed from a hopper 15 through a conduit 16 mounted on a movable cross-head 4 into the axial bore 13 of a piston 5. The material is pushed towards a plate 12 by a reciprocating plunger 36. Several strokes of the plunger 36 are made to push several charges of material towards the plate 12 and to fill a container 8 with the material. The piston 5 is gradually moved back out of the container by the pressure of the material acting against a predetermined hydraulic pressure in cylinders mounted in a fixed cross-head 1. When the amount of material necessary to fill the container equals the amount of material in the bore, the plunger 36 is moved forwardly until a shoulder 45, Fig. 4, engages the cross-head 4. The plate 12 is raised and the piston 5 and the plunger 36 are moved forwardly to extrude the evenly-com. pacted mass of material 47 through a die 10. The cross-head 4 moves with the plunger 5. Alternatively, both the container and the bore may be filled, and then the plunger 36 need not be moved forwardly until the shoulder 45 engages the cross-head 4. The plunger 36 is so controlled that its forward strokes are of the same length regardless of the position of the cross-head 4. Passages 29, 30, 31 and 32 are provided for heating or cooling fluid.
