Abstract

655,517. Connecting beams to columns. MALMSTROM, P. E., NIELSEN, K. J. A., and RASMUSSEN, E. K. Nov. 2, 1948, No. 28468 [Class 20(iv)] In multi-storey buildings having columns 10 joined by longitudinal and transverse girders 14, 12, pressure is distributed over the abutting face of the girders, which may key into shallow recesses 18 in the columns by elastic tightening means, including, e.g. transverse members subject to bending, and ensuring pressure over the whole of the abutting faces. On each side of the transverse girders two steel wires 22 passing through holes 36 in the column are connected at each end to members 24 which are respectively connected by a strut 32 and a thrust screw 34 respectively to transverse pieces 28, 30, anchored to rods 26 protruding from the girders. Similar means including tension wires passing through holes 38 in the column are provided above and below the longitudinal girders 14, and for the butt joint 16 between elements of the column. Wedge-shaped iron blocks may be grouted in at the end faces of the girders and abut against angle irons 44 in the column, resilient hooks 46 also being secured to the top and bottom faces of the girders for fitting behind bars 48 when the girders are in position.
