Convention date, July 28, 1947. [Class 106 (ii)] An apparatus for use in determining the bearing capacity of soil at various depths comprises a pressure body 5, a tubular member 4 having a lower end adapted tc engage said body and drive it intc the soil and means for effecting limited axial displacement of the said body with respect to the said tubular member, and the pressure body 5 has a hollow internally. cylindrical extension 7 which sur. rounds, and is slidable on, the end part of the tubular member, the length of the extension being greater than the displacement of the body relative to the said member. The body 5 is of conical form and the extension 7 tapers upwardly and fits closely over the tube 4 which is secured to a larger tube 2. To make a test, the tube 2 is first forced down, carrying with it the body 5, to the depth at which the test is to be made. The force required further to depress the body 5, by means of a rod 1 engaging an enlarged end 6 of a rod 3 secured to the body, is then determined and is a measure of the required bearing capacity. On withdrawing the tube 2, the end of the tube 4 engages the enlarged part 6 of the rod 3 and so withdraws the body 5. The extension 7 prevents the entry of soil between the rod 3 and tube 4. The base of the conical body 5 is of larger diameter than any part of the extension 7 so that, when a test is made, there is substantially no adhesion to the sides of the extension.
