840,980. Testing physical qualities of materials. STICHTING WATERBAUWKUNDIG LABORATORIUM. Jan. 29, 1957 [Jan. 30, 1956], No. 3132/57. Class 106 (2). An apparatus for determining the bearing capacity of the soil at various depths comprises a pressure body 18, able to be forced into the soil by a press 5 driving on a rod 17 located inside a sounding-tube 16, which can also be driven into the soil, the press being anchored to the sounding tube 16. In the embodiment shown, a derrick 4 on a ship 3 supports an hydraulic press 5 and a hammer 19, either of which can be connected with the sounding tube 16. The sounding tube 16 encloses the rod 17 carrying the pressure body 18 and is slidable in a stay-tube 14 which fits in an outer casing 13. The casing 13 is driven deeply into the soil, the hammer 19 is then allowed to drive the sounding tube 16 and with it the body 18 a suitable distance, after which the pressure body 18 alone is driven by the hydraulic press 5, the hammer 19 being held aside. The pressure required to drive the body 18 is read from one of two gauges 37, 38, for high and low pressures respectively, and this is a measure of the cone resistance of the body 18. It is stated that if the press and hammer are suitably constructed it is possible to leave the press connected to the sounding tube during driving in. Specification 655,212 is referred to.
