Abstract
812,514. Testing hardness of materials. ARTHUIS, A. R. April 30, 1957 [May 11, 1956], No. 13710/57. Class 106 (2). Apparatus for determining the surface hardness inside hollow cylindrical bodies comprises two instruments 1, 14 interconnected by flexible tubing, namely a penetrator carrier 1 which can be moved independently and an instrument for generating the hydraulic pressure required to produce the impression of the penetrator 3, and for hydropneumatically indicating the depth of penetration. The penetrator carrier, Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a cylinder 1 supported by a cradle 10, which may be replaced by others of differing sizes, the cylinder 1 having a piston 2 and indentor 3 sliding in a radial bore. The piston 2 acts on one end of a lever 8, the opposite end of which acts on a metallic bellows 6. The pressure generator and indicator is shown in Fig. 4. A plunger 15, actuated by a handle 17 acts on oil in a duct 18, communicating with a bore 5 in the cylinder 1 by means of a flexible tube 12. This duct 18 also communicates with the interior of a cylinder 20, in which the pressure of the oil acts on a plunger 19, which, together with a weight 21, forms the minor load for a Rockwell test. Further inward movement of the plunger 15 causes the plunger 19 to pick up a second weight 22 to form the total load for the test. A cylinder 23 contains liquid and the upper surface is in communication with the interior of the bellows 6 by means of a flexible tube 13, indication of the degree of compression of the bellows 6 being given by the level of liquid in a capillary tube 30. The cradle may be replaced by an arrangement of mechanical or hydraulic jacks.
