Testing hardness of materials.-The hardness of underground strata is ascertained by boring to the strata and placing a pressure - body thereon, exerting a variable and measurable pressure on the body and noting the sinking of the latter. In Fig. 1 the bore-hole is lined with a tube a which supports a pivoted lever d resting on a stop c<1> and carrying a weight n; a pressure-plate i has a depending cylinder k and is subjected to pressure by admitting water, saltsolution, glycerine, air &c. under pressure to a cylinder f carried by the lever d and containing a piston g connected to the pressure-plate. Yield is noted as by an indicator o. In a modification, the cylinder is rigidly connected to the tube a and in a further form, the cylinder is secured to the pressure plate and placed at the foot of the bore-hole while the piston is secured to the pivoted lever d by a rod which is hollow for the supply of pressure fluid to the cylinder. In another form, the cylinder is secured to the pressure plate, and the piston rod bears against stops in the tube a while in a further form, the pressure is applied by a weight adjustably supported on a lever pivotally carried by the tube a. The pressure plate may be replaced by pointed &c. members and the pressure-applying devices may be supported independently of the tube a.
