Abstract

465,804. Testing hardness of materials. WILLIAMS, J. F. Nov. 13, 1935, No. 31447. [Class 106 (ii)] Portable apparatus for testing hardness of materials comprises a spring-pressed plunger 11 having at one end a striking element 12 and adapted to be released by the action of pulling a trigger 27, the impression made by the element 12 in the material under test being measured with the aid of a microscope carried together with a lamp in the casing 23 forming the handle of the apparatus. The compression of the spring 16 is adjusted by moving a plunger 17 by a screw rod 21, the plunger 17 carrying an indicator moving over a scale. A mathematical formula is given for determining the relation between the compressive strength of concrete and the diameter of the impression therein effected by the device. The spring 16 may be replaced by a compressed-air device.
