Abstract
627,529. Testing hardness of materials. SPOJENE OCELARNY NARODNI PODNIK. Jan. 15, 1947, No. 1415. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1946. [Class 106 (ii)] A device for testing the hardness of materials comprises a unit to be removably secured in a holder therefor and having an open-ended guide sleeve D with an internal abutment at each end, a head G having a diamond pyramid at one end and its other end engaged behind the abutment in one open end of the sleeve, a plunger P slidably mounted in the other end of the sleeve and engageable with the adjacent abutment therein, a helical compression spring E mounted between the head G and the plunger, and hand-operable means for displacing the plunger towards the head. The sleeve D may be secured either in an arm R, Fig. 1, adjustably mounted on an upright or in a cylinder C, Fig. 2, having a base flange which may be held against the test surface. The load is applied in the former case by a handlever A acting on the plunger P through a link B and in the latter case by hand directly on the plunger. A nut F, having a lock-nut, is adjusted to limit the compression of the spring and so to determine the load applied. A shield J is secured to a guide N for the head G, the guide being secured to the sleeve D. The impression produced in the test-piece by the diamond point is measured by means of a microscope.
