Abstract
541,203. Testing springs. WEAVER, W. A., and WILLS, H. P. May 11, 1940, No. 8509. [Class 106 (ii)] A yieldable member is adapted to be placed in situ against the valve and pressure is applied to such member to move the valve against its spring the yield of said member or the pressure applied thereto being indicated. A bracket consisting of two side plates a secured at their upper ends by a rivet b is fitted to the lugs e of the valve rocker by a pin c. Inclined wings f on the plates a engage the lugs to hold the plates parallel to the valve stem axis. On the rivet b is pivoted an L-shaped lever g with a bifurcated end having cam-shaped extremities h. The other end is also bifurcated and notched at i to engage over pins j on a collar k rotatably supported on a screw m which passes through a collar n pivoted in the plates a. Also pivoted to the bracket below the collar n is a lever o the pointer arm p of which cooperates with a scale q on one plate a while the other arm is provided with a screw r adapted to engage the valve cap s. The lever o is fitted with a spring o<SP>1</SP>. In combination with this apparatus is a cylinder t containing a piston t<SP>1</SP> the stem of which projects through the cylinder and carries a sleeve t<SP>2</SP> to fit over the valve stem. On the upper end of the cylinder is a pressure gauge v and it is fitted with a return spring w. In use, the device t, t<SP>2</SP> is placed over the valve stem and the part h of lever g brought down thereon. While holding it with one hand the screw m is then turned until the trunnion can be engaged with the hook i and turned further until pressure can be brought on to this end of the lever g. Further turning of the screw g slightly moves the valve and a reading is obtained of the spring pressure available to hold the valve to its seating. The screw r is now turned to zeroize pointer p. Further turning of the screw depresses the valve and readings are taken of the compression of the spring indicated by pointer p and of gauge v. In a modification a quick impulse is given to the lever by cam means and the pressure sensitive device and the compression measuring device are located at a distance and work recording pointers.
