Abstract

289,203. Avery, Ltd., W. & T., and Holroyd, S. Feb. 25, 1927. Linear-dimension gauges. - Comprises a bracket adapted to be clamped to a specimen to be stressed in a testing-machine and having two pointed projections engaging the usual spaced marks in the specimen, one projection being fixed to the bracket while the other is carried by a lever fulcrummed in the bracket and having attached thereto a pointer or scale co-operating with a fixed scale or index. The bracket 7 is provided with perforated lugs 7<a>, 7b through which is guided a rod 8 on the cranked end of which is a rubber buffer 9 adapted to grip the specimen 5. A collar 10 may be secured to the rod at any point and a projection on the collar engages a slot in the bracket to prevent the rod turning. The bracket is placed to engage the specimen a fixed centre 12 engaging one of the spaced centre marks on the specimen while a movable centre 14b engages the other mark. The movable centre is carried on a lever 14 mounted on a knife edge 14<a> resting on a bearing block 13 in a housing 7<d> provided on the bracket. A lug 7<g> on the lever 14 is connected by a spring 18 to a fixed pin 19 on the bracket. Secured to the arm is a long pointer 15 carrying at the outer end a curved scale 16 sliding in a slot in a curved arm 7f on the bracket the arm 7f being also provided with a scale. A screw 21 serves to adjust the arm 14 in the housing and a screw 22 to adjust the pointer 15. As the specimen extends under stress, the sudden increase in the rate of extension at the yield point is readily observed on the scale.
