Abstract

380,155. Testing strength of materials. BERRIDGE, H., 8, Worcester Gardens, Sutton, Surrey. June 16, 1931, No. 17477. [Class 106 (ii).] Apparatus for testing by crushing samples of mortar or other substance in about # in. or ¢ in. cubes comprises a metal base plate 1 on which slides a plate 2 between which and an actuating screw 11 is a spring balance 10. The plate 2 is slotted, guide bolts 3 screwed into the base passing through the slots. The plate 2 is provided with a jaw 7 between which and a fixed jaw 5 on the end of the base the sample to be tested is placed. A slot 6 in the plate accommodates the jaw 5. The spring balance 10 is connected at one end by a hook 9 to the sliding plate 2 and at the other end to a screw 11 moved axially by turning a nut to which a handle is attached. The index 10a gives the stress applied and a frictionally held index 10b pushed by the index 10a gives the maximum stress applied. In a modification the screw is mounted below the base and rotated to move a guided nut to which is attached a spring balance having a circular dial. The Specification also describes a mould for making specimens of the mortar or like to be tested, which comprises two wooden blocks connected by screws which pass through distance pieces at the ends. The space between the blocks is divided into cubes by wooden slides inserted into notches in the blocks. The mould is filled with the material, the blocks clamped together, and the material allowed to set for two days.
