Abstract
557,434. Testing balance. AVERY, Ltd., W. & T., and BOWEN, E. July 9, 1942, No. 9531. [Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] An apparatus for testing the balance, the centre of gravity or predetermined turning moment of an air screw comprises a rotatable blade carrier adjustable to admit of a test in both a horizontal and vertical disposition and means for interconnecting the carrier with a weighing apparatus. A carrier block d has seceured to one face a counterbalancing arm e with adjustable weight e<SP>1</SP> and to the opposite face a part for receiving a hub d<SP>1</SP> which in turn receives the butt of an air screw blade f. The carrier block d may turn about a spindle g in one with coaxial knife edges e<SP>2</SP> in bearings c. The block may be clamped to the spindle by friction between a fibre shoe h and the spindle, the friction being regulated by a screw and spring j, j<SP>1</SP>. The spindle g is extended at right angles at one end to form a lever k which is connected by a link l to the lever system m of a weighing apparatus n reading plus or minus each side of "zero". The blade f and arm e may be arranged either horizontally as shown or vertically, a locking pin o engaging a hole o<SP>1</SP> (not shown) or o<SP>2</SP> to lock the device in one or other position while adjustments are made. A pointer d<SP>2</SP> reading against a mark a<SP>1</SP> indicates when balance is attained. The end of the lever k may be gripped and held by a spring grip p<SP>3</SP>, q operated from a handle p through spindle p<SP>1</SP> and toothed gear and cam. In use, a standard blade is secured to the block and the weight e<SP>1</SP> moved to effect balance, the pointer n<SP>1</SP> being adjusted to zero. The blade to be tested is substituted for the standard and the grip p<SP>3</SP> released so that the pointer n<SP>1</SP> may indicate the differences. The block and blade are then turned through 90 degrees and the experiment repeated with the blade in a vertical position. For the initial calibration, an arm from which are supported base weights may be used secured in the position of the blade.
