Abstract
771,540. Testing shear strength of soil. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 6, 1955 [June 14, 1954], No. 17476/54. Class 106 (2). Apparatus for measuring the shear strength of soil in situ comprises a hollow cylindrical shearbox 10, Fig. 1, having in its open bottom vanes 11 for causing soil in it to rotate with it when it is pressed downwardly into the ground, means for measuring the torque required to turn the shearbox, and a withdrawable hollow cylindrical shroud 40, Fig. 3, fitted round the outside of the shearbox 10 so that the shroud can be thrust into the ground with the shearbox and then withdrawn leaving the shearbox with its outer periphery free from the surrounding soil. The shroud 40 and shearbox 10 are thrust into the soil by hammering on the anvil 43 and the shroud may be removed by means of a jack placed between the anvil 43 and the bridge 17 of the shearbox. The shearbox is rotated by a rod 21, Fig. 2, coupled at 20, 22, after removal of the shroud, to a stem 14 carrying at its lower end a disc 15 engaging keys 16 internally of the shearbox permitted longitudinal movement but causing rotation of the rod 21, 14 to be communicated to the shear box. The torque is measured by the relative angular displacement as indicated on a dial gauge 28 between the rod 21 and an outer tube 24 with its upper end free and its lower end fixed at 25 to the rod 21 and to a loading platform 30 for weights 31.
