Abstract

654,853. Centrifugal pumps. NASH ENGINEERING CO. Feb. 27, 1948, No. 6061- Convention date, March 7, 1946. [Class 110(i)] Two annular gas collecting chambers communicate directly with the interior of the pump chamber near the two inlets of the impeller, which is of the double-suction type, the collected gases being led away through conduits. The pump is mounted on the bottom of an aircraft fuel tank by means of a flange 10, Fig. 1. Fuel passes through strainers 18 and 64 to the eyes 31 and 32 respectively of the impeller 12. Gas bubbles separate out near the entrance to each impeller passage and enter annular grooves 36 and 37. The gases pass by way of conduits 40, 41 and 42 and a conduit 45 to suction ports 43 and 46 respectively of a twolobe liquid-ring pump 44. The two lobes of the pump 44 discharge through respective ports 52 and 53 into a discharge chamber 54 and thence by way of a port 55 into the fuel tank. The outer edge 60 of each impeller blade 28 or 29 is at an angle of 45 degrees to 75 degrees, but preferably 55 degrees, to the plane of rotation; and the radially outer parts 63, Fig. 2, extend substantially concentric to the impeller axis.
