Abstract

1,022,076. Priming centrifugal pumps. WESSELINGER GUSSWERKE - RHEINGUSS G.m.b.H. Heading F1C. A pump comprises a bladed rotor arranged within a first chamber in the pump casing, an inlet for entry of fluid into the first chamber, a second chamber surrounding the axis of rotation of the rotor and axially displaced from the first chamber, means for inducing turbulence into fluid passing from the first chamber into the second chamber, and a fluid outlet from the second chamber located inwardly of the periphery of the second chamber. In the pump shown in Fig. 5, the rotor 7 operates within a first chamber 51, and a second chamber 52 axially displaced from the first chamber is bounded by a fixed disc 53 and an annular web 54. When the pump is started, liquid present in the chambers 51, 52 assumes the form of a ring. During priming, air drawn in through the intake 3 mixes with the liquid in chamber 51, the mixture separating into liquid and air again in chamber 52, and the separated air moving towards the centre and then passing out of the chamber 52 to be discharged through the pump delivery port 57. The mixing of the air with the liquid in chamber 51 is promoted by turbulenceinducing means 55 comprising an annular port completely surrounding the rotor and a slightly spiral port 60. In one construction of the turbulence-inducing means, Fig. 7 (not shown), portions 71 extend over the entire thickness of the rotor while portion 72 extends only over the thickness of the back plate 8 of the rotor, the passage of fluid from chambers 51 to chamber 52 taking place through apertures 73. In another form of the turbulence-inducing means, Fig. 8 (not shown), portions 81 and 82 and apertures 83 correspond to the portions 71 and 72 and apertures 73 respectively. The annular web 54 may be shortened as shown at 56, in which case a separate air outlet 58 is provided and may be connected to the delivery port 57 through a conduit (not shown).
