Abstract
626,907. Centrifugal pumps. NORRIS, E. O. Jan. 3, 1947, No. 238. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1946. [Class 110(i)] . A pumping means comprises a rotary chamber communicating with a suction device, means for admitting air and liquid .to the chamber, means in the chamber for separating the liquid from the gas, and means for discharging liquid from the chamber, the suction device serving to withdraw the separated air. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the suction means comprises a gear pump 21. A mixture of liquid and air is drawn in through an inlet passage 30 and passes through a spout 32 into a rotary chamber 17. The layer of rotating liquid lining the inner periphery of the rotary chamber 17 is ejected by way of a scoop 34 to the outlet passage 31, and the air is drawn through orifices 19 into the gear pump chamber and, after passing through the motor 12 for cooling purposes, is discharged to the atmosphere. The driving shaft 13 carries two discs 36, 37, the angular position of the latter being adjustable when the motor is at rest by means of a knob 39. This adjustment, by varying the extent of overlap of notches 43, 44, Fig. 4, regulates the suction and hence also the output. Further regulation is provided by adjustment of a valve 48 having ports 47 for the admission of additional air. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the suction is provided by a centrifugal fan 64, which may be of a multi-stage type. A casting 58 and a chamber 61 rotate with the fan. A flexible tube 73 is thrown outwardly on rotation, uncovering suction ports 68 in the casting 58. Liquid drawn in through the inlet 78 forms a rotating lining within the rotating chamber 61 and is expelled through an annular passage 83. Vanes 84 preferably of spiral form, may be provided within the passage 83 to assist in arresting rotation of the outflowing liquid. The tube 73, the specific gravity of which is less than that of the liquid being pumped, is floated back into contact with the ports 68 on the occurrence of an excessive accumulation of liquid in the rotating chamber 61.. A further flexible tube 87 makes contact with the surface of the outlet pipe to prevent leakage when the pump. ; is stationary. The pump may form part of a floor scrubber or may be used for priming a normal type of centrifugal pump.
