Abstract

1,081,163. Centrifugal pumps. U. M. W. BARSKE AND W. MURRAY. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 19, 1963], No. 30464/64. Heading F1C. In a centrifugal pump having an impeller in the form of a circular vessel with side walls 11, 12 (Fig. 1) and a peripheral wall 13, the peripheral wall or one on each side wall contains forwardly or backwardly directed nozzles through which liquid is discharged substantially tangentially into chamber 31. The nozzle outlet apertures may be flush with the outer surface of the impeller as shown at (23) in Fig. 4 (not shown) and (44, 45) in Fig. 5 (not shown). Alternatively, the apertures may be formed in small protrusions on the impeller periphery as shown at (24) in Fig. 4 (not shown), or on the side walls as shown at (44, 45) in the upper part of Fig. 6 (not shown). To increase the skin friction in the region of forwardly directed nozzles in the peripheral wall and thereby improve flow through the nozzles, the peripheral rims of the side walls may be extended radially as shown in Fig. 9 (not shown). With nozzles in the side walls, rings (64), Fig. 10 (not shown), adjacent the nozzle outlet apertures may be provided for this purpose. Openings 29 in the blades 22 interconnect the spaces therebetween to provide pressure balance and assist priming. The impeller may be formed from two parts 11, 13 and 12, 22 riveted together at 26, or from three parts, namely, the peripheral wall and the two side walls, the latter each carrying blade portions which after assembly of the impeller are separated by narrow slots (48), Fig. 5 (not shown). In the latter impeller assembly, radially shorter blades (52), Fig.7 (not shown) are arranged intermediate the main blades. A stationary diffuser ring (34a), Fig. 11 (not shown), may be provided intermediate the impeller and the pump outer casing. The latter may have one or more tangential outlet diffusers comprising a conical insert (40), Fig. 12 (not shown) projecting into the chamber (31) as described in Specification 1,081,164.
