Abstract

654,407. Suction-cleaner handles. EUREKA WILLIAMS CORPORATION. Jan. 22, 1948, No. 1974. Convention date, March 14, 1947. [Class 61 (i) ] [Also in Groups XXV and XXVIII] The body of a suction cleaner or the like has an upstanding handle pivoted for swinging movement from a parked position in one direction to an operating position and back to said parked position, a releasable locking mechanism automatically operable for locking the handle in parked position on its being swung thereto, the mechanism comprising a locking element on the handle, a locking member on the body arranged to engage the locking element to lock the handle against movement in the direction towards the operating position, and means actuated by movement of the handle in the other direction from the parked position for moving the locking member out of the path of the locking element to release the handle. A shaft 44, secured in the side plates of a handle socket 46, passes through bearings in the arms of a bracket 40 secured to the body of the cleaner 30. A cross-pin 50 in the handle socket co-operates with a latch 52, comprising two spaced parallel sides, pivoted in bracket 40 and biassed in clockwise direction, as seen in the figures, by a spring 56. The upper surfaces of the sides of the latch have notches 58 in which, when the handle is in vertical position (Fig. 1) pin 50 is engaged. Counter clockwise movement of the handle is then prevented by engagement of pin 50 against the sides of the notches, but slight movement clockwise depresses latch 52 to the position of Fig. 2, where it is held by engaging in a bend in a spring 62; the handle may then be rotated counter-clockwise to operating position. During this movement pin 50 makes contact with a horn 68 on the lever 52, and restores it to the position of Fig. 1. A torsion spring 70 coiled around the shaft 44 and bearing against pin 50 partially counter-balances the weight of the handle. A lever 72, Fig. 4, pivoted at 74 to the bracket 40 at a point outside the handle has a notch 78 adapted to receive a roller 80 and form a yieldable stop which determines the normal limit of the operating position of the handle.
