[Class 100 (i)] In apparatus for feeding sheets to a printing or other machine at a relatively fast speed, and retarding each sheet before register against front stops 12, the retarding means comprises a shoe 69, pivoted at 73, adapted to be pressed on the sheet, against the action of a weak spring 76, by a resiliently-mounted pin 64 carried in a bell-crank lever 58. The lever 58 is adapted to be rocked by a lever 52 secured to a shaft 47 which is rocked, through link-and-lever means, by a cam 27 secured to a driven shaft 26. As shown, cardboard &c. sheets S are fed by conveyer belts 16 and spring- pressed rider wheels 22 to the stops 12 adjacent a gripper-cylinder 13 which takes the sheets to a printing-press or other machine. An extension 21 of the feed board 14 of the conveyer has mounted thereon side brackets, supporting the rockable shaft 47, connected together by a transversely-extending tube 50 on which two transversely-adjustable sheet-retarding devices 24 are mounted. Each such device comprises a split bracket 51, clamped to the tube 50 and supported on the shaft 47, an eccentric stud 61 thereon forming an adjustable pivot for the bell-crank lever 58, and a slotted portion to receive a block 71 carrying the pivot 73 for the shoe 69. The lever 52 is arranged on the shaft 47 adjacent the bracket 51. Adjustable contact screws are provided in the levers 52, 58. Each shoe 69 is highly polished and cooperates with a spring &c. tongue arranged on or in the plate 21. If paper or like light sheets are being fed, the shoes 69 may be arranged to act on the rear instead of the leading edges of the sheets.
