Abstract

564,322. Feeding sheets. BACKHOUSE, H. T. March 19, 1943, No. 4540. [Class 100 (i)] Sheet registering of the kind in which sheets are fed over a layboard 10 fitted with front stops 11 against which the front edges of the sheets are registered, are constructed with one or more suction gripper devices to take control of the sheets as they approach the stops by gripping the underside of each sheet, moving the sheet until it engages the stops, and then moving to release the sheet prior to returning to receive the next sheet. In Fig. 1, the section apertures 16 are formed in a thin plate 12 let into the working surface of the board 10 and reciprocated by an oscillating lever 14 on a hollow shaft 15 connected by a tube 18 to an aperture 17 in the board 10 over which the apertures 16 in the plate 12 passes. Preferably, two plates 12 are used and the suction is continued until the apertures 16 pass the stops 11 when the suction is cut off gradually. The plate 12 may be arranged on top of the board 10 and be reciprocated by a rack and pinion. In a modification, Fig. 4, the suction apertures 42 are arranged in a roller 40 and act in succession as these pass the suction port 45 arranged inside the roller 40. The sheets may be pressed into contact with the suction devices by flexible smoothers, and the invention may be applied to stream feeders. Specifications 446,886 and 541,333 are referred to.
