Abstract
653,964. Hot-water boilers. DELANOY, A. Feb. 16, 1948, Nos. 4462 and 4463. Convention dates, Feb. 17, 1947 and Dec. 10, 1947. [Class 64(i)] [Also in Group XI] In a process for heating a moving liquid (e.g. water) by radiation, the liquid is passed through a glass tube, the wall of which is heated by radiation of the heat produced by the combustion of a gas. In the apparatus shown for carrying out the process, the lower coils 2 of a coiled glass tube receive radiant heat from a heat radiating body 1, located within the coils, the upper coils 2<SP>1</SP> being heated by the combustion products of the gas. A baffle 10 directs the combustion products to the outlet at the top of a surrounding casing 5 made of aluminium alloy and having its inner surface polished. The heat radiating, body may comprise a hollow truncated cone 1 (as shown), closed at the top and having a gas burner at its lower end, the cone being made of wire gauze or perforated sheet metal such as iron-nickel-chromium alloy, or of a refractory porous ceramic material such as corundum, chromite or silicon carbide. Alternatively the heat radiating body may comprise contiguous luminous flames issuing from a burner or burners (see Figs. 4 to 7, not shown), and in this form the radiation is said to be caused by small carbon particles in the flames which are brought to incandescence.
