Abstract

312,254. Iliffe, R. J., and Buell Combustion Co., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1928. Pulverulent-fuel furnaces. - A powdered-fuel burner assembly comprises an air-distributing chamber carrying the burner and supplying secondary air both externally and internally of the fuel supply nozzle, the whole constituting a self-contained unit readily fitted to the furnace, mouth. The air chamber 2, supplied at 3 with air, preferably preheated, carries the burner proper 4 supplied with fuel and primary air at 12 and containing a central air tube 13. The burner 4 projects within a taper refractory nozzle 5 .carried by the chamber 2 which further has a refractorylined extension 6<a> fitting into the furnace mouth. Air from the chamber 2 passes between the burner 4 and nozzle 5 and also by ports 14 into the pipe 13 to an amount controllable by rotation of the pipe 13. Centrally of the pipe 13 is a perforated deflector cone 22 carried by an axially adjustable rod supported by ball-carrying arms 21. A sleeve 24 carries whirl-imparting blades 25 and on the rear wall of the chamber 2. are similar blades 27 which also help to heat the air supply. The whole assembly is carried by wheels 9 on rails 8 and is held up against the furnace bv ratchet levers 34 or by counterweighted levers. Joint is made with the furnace mouth at 32 and additional securing means 33 may be employed. In a modification, Fig. 5, an annular recess 43 with inserted baffle 44 afford means for heating the incoming air. The exposed wall of the chamber is lagged at 29. Ash can be withdrawn at 41, 42.
