Abstract

467,934. Crucible furnaces; liquidfuel burners. MADDEN, J. J., and LAMBERTI, A. A. March 14, 1936, No. 7759. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XI] Heavy liquid fuel is drawn from a tank 36 by a jet of compressed air or gas projected from an adjustable pipe 21 across the orifice of the fuel pipe 12, and the fuel, compressed air or gas, and preheated air or gas supplied at a lower pressure to the chamber 10, are mixed by imping- ing on rotating vanes 18 carried by a spider 19, before discharge through a curved or conical nozzle 13 into the furnace. Figs. 3 and 5 show the burner applied for heating a furnace for fusing glass in crucibles C, the air, supplied at a pressure of 14 inches of water to the chamber 10, being preheated to 400-500‹ C. and passing through pipes 34 arranged in the flue gas channels 28. The compressed air or gas supplied to the pipe 21 at a pressure of 8-10 lb. per square inch is preheated to 100‹ C. by passing through a helical pipe 35 in a fireclay brick surrounding the burner B. The fuel tank 36 is mounted on a bracket on the-furnace wall and is covered by a perforated sheet 38. Fuel is supplied to the tank 36 through a ball cock 40 and is heated to 100‹ C. by passing hot waste furnace gases through a coil 41. The crucibles are supported in an inclined position on a ledge 29 with their upper ends resting in niches or openings in the side walls 25. The floor of the furnace is formed with downwardly inclined channels 30 to convey molten glass spilt from the crucibles to discharge apertures 42.
