Abstract

233,906. Simpson, W. M. June 14,1924. Atmospheric vapour burners; vaporizing-apparatus.-The vaporizer supplying the atmospheric burner head or heads 9 of a domestic heating stove comprises a hollow outer cone 1* made of brass or other non-ferrous metal and a hollow or solid inner cone 1** of suitable heatresisting material suspended by a steel rod 6 adjustably secured to a cover 5 on the outer cone 1*. When the vaporizer is heated the differential expansion between the brass cone 1* and the steel rod 6 causes the formation or enlargement of a capillary space between the cones 1*, 1**. Oil is admitted under pressure to the vaporizer through a non-return valve 18 and a union which is surrounded by a preheating trough 7. The vapour leaves the vaporizer through a pipe 4 and issues through a nipple 11 into an air induction tube 12 which is arranged outside the stove and leads into a mixing-tube 8 communicating with the burner heads. The nipple 11 may be fitted with a pricker-needle 14. The vaporizer is heated by a burner nozzle 13 fixed on the mixing-tube 8. The flame from the nozzle 13 may be directed on to the vaporizer by means of an asbestos-lined hood fixed to the cover 5 and is regulated by a valve such as an adjustable slide 19 in the mixing-tube 8. The admission of air to the tube is regulated by means of a screw-adjusted plate 17. An adjustable extension 16 on the tube 12 ensures that any vapour escaping from the gland surrounding the pricker needle is drawn into the tube 12. The rod 6 may be extended to engage with the valve 18 to prevent the passage of oil when the vaporizer is cold. The Provisional Specification states that the inner cone may be formed from asbestos pulp treated with silicate of soda and that the burner heads are fitted with metal caps pierced with saw-cuts, the flames from which play on clay mantles or pierced tubes. It also states that the mixing tube may be curved or annular, and have a circular burning surface, the vaporizer cones being arranged within the annulus.
