Description

S. N. PRATHER & L. H. BOHN.
GAS. BURNER.
No. 451,517. r Patented May 5,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAMUEL N. PRATHER AND LOUIS H. BOIIN, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS-BURN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,517, dated May 5, 1891.
Application filed July 9, 1890- Serial No. 358,182. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, SAMUEL N. PRATHER and LOUIS II. BOHN, of Allegheny city, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burners, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact descriptoward the top and above said offset or shoulder. The chamber so formed at the base of the burner is of material advantage, as it checks the flow of gas, allows the proper interminghng of the air therewith, and prevents .the combustible mixture from rising directly and in a body to the upper outlets of the burner, also serving to change the currents so that the combustible mixture of air and gas escapes with substantially uniform pressure at each and all the several outlets of the burner.
o is. the gas-supply pipe, which enters the chamber 2 through an air-mixing chamber.
4., which may be of usual construction. The face- I) of the chamber 2 is perforated with a number of small holes 0 for the outlet of gas.
5 is an upright plate or partition, which is set in front of the burner-plate 2 at the base thereof, and 6 6 are air-inlets at the base of the intermediate space or flue e. The plate 5 is preferably adjustable to and ,from the face of the burner, and may be made of mica or other transparent material set in a suitable inclosing-frame, as shown in the drawlugs.
In the use of the burner the gas escapes from the perforations in the face-plate and burns thereat. The portion of gas which escapes from the perforations back of the plate 5 passes upwardly, as indicated by the arrows, inducing with it a supply of air from the perforations 6, and has the effect of bettel-ing the combustion, increasing the heat given by all the gas-jets above the top of the plate 5, and by creating a direct upward draft along the face of the plate causing them to burn in a broad sheet of flame. The advantages ,of the burner in this regard have been demonstrated by its practical and successful use.
Our invention consists in the combination, with a vertical burner having a series of gasoutlets at different levels, of a vertical plate arranged in front thereof and extending up in front of the lower part or base of said burner to form a flue in front of and at the base of the burner, whereby the gas is caused to burn in a bright uniform sheet over the whole face of the burner.
Our burner is especially desirable for use in burning natural gas, though itmaybeemployed in burning manufactured gas also. It may be used in a grate or open fire-place, or maybe burned as an open burner for heating rooms. In construction, form, and relative arrangement of the parts it may be modified in divers ways.
IVe claim 1. The combination, with a gas burner having an upright face, of an upright plate arranged in front thereof and at a short distance therefrom at the base, said burnerhaving in its face series of gas-outlets arranged on different levels extending above the said plate, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with an upright or vertical burner having a series of gas-outlets arranged on different levels from bottom to top thereof, of a sliding or adjustable plate arranged in front of said burners and extending up to a point above the lower series of gas-outlets of. the burner, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, with an upright or vertical gas-burner having an enlarged chamber at its base and a perforated burner-face which extends up above the enlarged base of the burner, of a plate arranged in front of the perforated face of said burner and extending up to substantially the height of the enlarged base portion of the burner, sub stantially as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands this 1st day of July, A. D. 1890.
