Abstract

320,643. Richardson, A. W. June 18, 1928. Wick burners, annular blue flame; flame protectors; oil reservoirs; burners, materials for and preventing conduction of heat from. - A wick burner capable of burning for long periods without attention and suitable for use in refrigerating apparatus, stoves &c. comprises an annular wick 6 arranged between two tubes 4, 16 of which the outer tube 16 is formed of glass, porcelain or other poor heat-conducting material of such a thickness that a heated zone is maintained adjacent the upper end of the wick. A perforated tube 5 projecting a considerable distance above the wick forms a primary air supply passage, and a perforated cylinder or cone 19 forms with the tube 5 a mixing chamber above the upper end of the wick. The tube 5 is preferably made from a non- scaling metal alloy and is covered at the top by an apertured plate or gauze. The tube 16 is carried by a nut 17 secured to the upper end of a fuel container 1 into which the wick extends. The tube 5 is connected by strips 9 to a vertically adjustable tube 10 which is secured in position when adjusted by a nut 11 screwing into a block 12. The block 12 is carried by a bracket 13 supporting a reservoir 2 supplying the container 1. The air supply to the tube 5 is regulated by means of a perforated sleeve 15 having apertures corresponding to apertures provided in the tube 10. A cylinder 21 supported by vanes 20 on the cylinder 19 forms a flue. Suitable dimensions of the various parts are stated in the Specification. Operating means are provided by which at starting the wick can be raised and subsequently lowered. When the burner is in normal operation the outer tube 16 projects #" to <3>/16" above the wick. When burning oils of low flash point the tubes 4, 5 are preferably insulated from one another by a glass tube to minimize the conduction of heat.
