Wick burners, annular blue flame; burners, materials for.-An annular wick burner for heating and illuminating lamps comprises a steel inner tube 6 forming a primary air-supply passage and an outer tube 12 of glass, porcelain, or other poor heat-conducting material, the outer wick tube during normal burning projecting above the wick 14 and being of such a thickness as to form adjacent to the top of the wick a heated zone to vaporize the fuel. The tube 6 may be arranged within a sleeve 2 secured in the fuel chamber 1 and be adjustable vertically by turning a nut 7. The bottom of the tube is provided with air inlets and is surrounded by a correspondingly perforated sleeve 8 connected to it by a pin-and-slot connection 10, 11. The outer tube 12 is carried by a sleeve nut 13 screwing into the chamber 1. The burner may be used for heating the generator of a refrigerating apparatus, the flue 16 leading to the refrigerating apparatus being fitted with a sleeve 17 having a flared lower end. By rotating the sleeve 13 the gap between the tube 12 and sleeve 17 and consequently the secondary air supply to the top of the wick can be regulated. The sleeve 17 may alternatively be adjustable vertically in the flue 16. The flame does not burn actually in contact with the wick so that the wick is not charred. The wick may be adjusted vertically by means of a handle 15. In a modified form of lamp the outer tube 12 is outwardly flared and a flamespreader is provided.
