Abstract

653,391. Inkwells ; reservoir nibs. ESTERBROOK PEN CO. Aug. 6, 1947, No. 21360. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1940. [Class 146 (iii)] For supplying ink to a pen comprising a feed-bar having capillary spaces and forming a fountain element, a capillary structure is mounted in an ink receptacle and is in engagement with the feed-bar of the pen above the level of the ink in the ink reservoir. An inkwell 10 is closed by a cover 11 having a plug socket 12 disposed in it at an angle as shown, the penholder 16 resting in a flared opening 15 of the socket. The capillary element 20 is supported by a pin 21 in a separate lower part 12a of the socket and comprises a rod of hard rubber or other suitable material slotted to give plate like parts 20a and a series of capillary spaces 20b in which ink may rise from the well 10. The upper portion of the element 20 is cut away at 20c to leave space for the feed-bar 18 of the nib 17, a spring 35 secured to the element 20 pressing the feed bar 18 into contact therewith. So that the ink shall not reach the nib 17 direct, the cover 11 partly fills the well 10, a mark being provided for filling purposes. The capillary element 20 may be replaced by spaced plates having a similar shape, or capillary tubes may be used, mounted on a stand in the we 1 10 and cut away under the feed bar 18, the socket 12 in this case being in one piece only. A socket i n one piece may also be used with the element 20 mou'nted therein. An inkwell made in two parts secured together may be used, the well being refilled through the opening for the socket 12 or through a separate opening. Nibs. The reservoir feed bar 18 for the nib 17 comprises air channels 18a and slots 18b extending longitudinally of the bar to a bevelled forward end 18c.
