Abstract
653,140. Steering motor vehicles. OAK TREE APPLIANCES, Ltd., CLARKE, J. L., and BROOKES, F. J. Sept. 3, 1948, No. 23204. [Classes 79 (iv) and 79 (v)] In a vehicle steering gear a single steerable wheel is carried by forks pivotally mounted about a vertical axis, a disc is mounted with the forks coaxial with their pivotal mounting and has a cable engaging the periphery thereof, the cable passing round a drum directly mounted on a steering column, and the cable is guided between the drum and the disc by tubular outer casings after the manner of Bowden cable mechanism, the casings being fixed relative to the vehicle frame. As shown applied to a tractor the steerable wheel 13 is carried by the forks 1, the upper ends of which are interconnected by plates 3, 4 and the disc 5 separated by distance pieces 6. The plates 3, 4 and the disc 5 are pivoted on I-shaped lugs 8 by a pivot pin 10, the lugs being secured to frame members 9. The ends of the cable 14 are secured to the disc 5 at 15 and the cable 14 passes through the casings 16 which are secured to a box 21 containing the drum 17. The cable 14 passes for several turns round and is secured at 19 to the drum 17 which is mounted on the steering column 18.
