Abstract

767,065. Tractor-trailer vehicles. SOC. INDUSTRIELLE DE MACHINES AGRICOLES ROTATIVES SIMAR, and DUFOUR, J. R. Jan. 12, 1955 [Feb. 11, 1954], No. 928/55. Classes 79(1), 79(3) and 79(5). A walk-type tractor having steering handles 31, 32, provided with control hand levers 33, 34 is used to push or pull a two-wheeled trailer by means of a draw bar 14 attached to the tractor, the driver steering by pivoting the wheels of the tractor relative to the wheels of the trailer, and is characterized by the tractor steering handles 31, 32, being hinged to the tractor so that they can be placed in a position enabling the drive to act on the control hand levers with his feet when the tractor is attached to the trailer and the driver is seated on a seat on either the tractor or trailer. In Figs. 1 and 2 the draw bar 14 consists of a tube rigidly attached to the tractor at one end and forming a fork 17 fixed to a disc 18 at its other end. The disc 18 can rotate about a pivot 37 on a disc 19 which is carried rigidly by the trailer axle 20. A seat 29 and a foot rest 30 are carried by the draw bar 14 and a steering handle 28 on -the trailer permits the trailer body and wheels to be rotated relative to the draw bar 14 which slides between transverse bars 26, 27 on the trailer. The steering handles 31, 32 of the tractor are universally connected to the tractor and can be swung into the positions 1, II and III shown in Fig. 1. In position III hand levers 33 and 34, for clutch and brakes respectively, can be actuated by the driver's feet by means of bars 35 and 36 pivoted to the draw bar 14 and resting on the hand levers. Alternatively the hand levers may be bent inwardly to engage the driver's feet. In a modification the draw bar 14 may be hinged to the tractor about a vertical axis means being provided for locking the hinge. With the hinge unlocked the driver may sit on the trailer facing the tractor and steer the tractor about the hinge using the tractor steering handles, in a manner that is well known. In Fig. 4 a second embodiment is shown in which the draw bar is rigidly connected to the tractor which the driver faces when seated on the trailer. The trailer wheels are pivoted on stub axles for rear wheel steering. Handle bars 42 or a steering wheel, are journalled into the draw bar 14 to steer the wheels by means of cross arm 43 and links 48. Bars 35, 36 are pivoted to the ends of a foot rest 30 to control the hand levers. By crossing the links 48 to reverse the sense of steering the driver may face the trailer as in Fig. 1. A longitudinally disposed pivot 51 allows the trailer to rock on its axle 46 or alternatively the draw bar 14 may be connected to the trailer so as to constitute a longitudinal pivot. In place of a reverse gear the tractor has a two stroke engine with an ignition cam such as to permit rotation in either direction.
