Abstract

814,821. Steering trailers; articulated vehicles. TASKERS OF ANDOVER (1932) Ltd. May 17, 1957 [May 17, 1956], No. 15432/56. Classes 79(3) and 79(5) In apparatus for steering the rear wheels of semi trailers in which the trailer is articulated on a king pin 6, Fig. 1, inserted in an aperture 10 on the tractor turntable 5, Fig. 2, a second abutment 8 on the trailer actuated by the ramp walls of the turntable 5 is arranged to steer the rear wheels when the tractor moves out of alignment. The abutment 8 comprises a cylindrical pin sliding in an arcuate groove 15 of a plate 16 on the trailer and engaging in a groove 25 of a crank arm 11 coupled to the rear wheel steering gear through push rods 13, 14. The portion of the pin 8 projecting below the plate 16 carries a pair of shoes 20, 21 engaging the sides 17, 18 of the ramp 19 on the tractor turntable 5 when the trailer is connected. The shoes 20, 21 are pivoted on a sliding block 22 which is urged forwardly by a spring 23 to bring the shoes into engagement with the sides 17, 18, springs 28 permitting the shoes to take up the different fork angle of different types of tractor. In a modification for a long vehicle, the arm 33, Fig. 4, is coupled to the rear wheels through push-pull rods 32, 44 and a lever 42 pivoted at 43 intermediately along the length of the vehicle. The second push-pull rod 44 is connected to four oscillatory wheel assemblies 30 which are interconnected through push-pull rods 46, 48, 50.
