[Class 12 (i)] A shaft mounting for precision instruments to avoid distortion on temperature changes comprises near one end of the shaft two adjacent rows of balls 13, each row respectively engaging one of two relatively adjustable opposed conical cups 6, 10 (with equal cone angles of 38 degrees to 48 degrees) the balls running in two adjacent shaft grooves 14 of radius greater than the ball radius by not more than 5 per cent; the other end of the shaft has a single row of balls running on the cylindrical surface thereof and engaged between two relatively-adjustable opposed conical cups 5, 9 with equal cone angles of 38 degrees to 48 degrees. The balls of the two adjacent rows rotate on axes 15, 16 parallel to the respective cone surfaces; the balls of the single row rotate on axes parallel to the shaft.
