Abstract
652,724. Stapling. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd. Nov. 26, 1948, No. 30729. [Class 89(iii)] In a stapling machine in which several lengths of wire ware bent to form staples by co-operating outside and inside formers 1, 6 and are then driven by a driver 7 slidable within the outside former 1, the staple is supported during driving by two independently movable members 3, 6 which support the legs and the crown of the staple respectively. In operation, the wire w supported on the crown support and inside former 6 is bent to shape by the outside former 1; then the crown support 6 is coupled to the driver 7 by a spring- pressed plunger 23 engaging a notch 7a. a plunger 13 being disengaged by a pin 15 on the outside former 1 acting through a lever 16, 18, and the leg support 3 pivoted at 2 on the outside former is engaged between the staple legs by engagement of a projection 3a with a spring-pressed plunger 5. Subsequent movement of the crown support 6 disengages by its bevelled end 6b the leg support 3 from the staple and is then itself disengaged by partial rotation of an eccentric pin 10a engaging a slot 11 and operated by the machine drive, to allow the leg support to return and to be finally disengaged by the completion of the driving of the staple.
