Abstract

The direct hydration of olefines to alcohols, particularly of ethylene to ethanol, is effected with a catalyst comprising activated montmorillonite which has been impregnated with hydrofluoric acid and calcined. Hydration is preferably effected at 250-350 DEG C. and under a pressure exceeding 500 lbs. per square inch.ALSO:A catalyst for the direct hydration of olefines (see Group IV (b)) is prepared by impregnating activated montmorillonite with hydrofluoric acid and calcining the product at a temperature of at least 200 DEG C., preferably 400-600 DEG C.
