Abstract
Isoprene is prepared by passing 1-methoxy-3-methyl butylene-4 in the vapour phase under a pressure equal to or lower than the atmospheric pressure and at elevated temperature, over alumina or aluminium silicate which catalysts may be improved by the addition of copper phosphate or sulphate of magnesium, lead or barium. Dimethyl ether is also formed by dehydration of the methanol produced by the reaction. In the example g -isoamylene methyl ether is passed over kaolin containing copper phosphate at 310 DEG C. and at reduced pressure. The gaseous products are dried and condensed and fractionated. Specification 663,117 is referred to.ALSO:A catalyst comprising alumina or aluminium silicate, which may be improved by the addition of copper phosphate or a sulphate of magnesium, lead or barium, is employed in producing isoprene from g -isoamylene methyl ether (1-methoxy-3-methyl butylene-4) (see Group IV(b)). In the example the catalyst is employed in the form of small cylinders obtained by mixing kaolin and copper phosphate with water and forcing the paste formed through a calibrated tube.
