[Class 78 (iv)] [Also in Group XXI] Mounted on a supporting plate in bearings 113, 112 is an axially-movable externallythreaded tubular rod 115 which is moved by a rotating nut 128 positioned within a housing 114, rotation of the rod being prevented by a key 123 in the bearing 112 engaging in a keyway 119 formed in the rod. At one end of the rod there is screwed on one portion 140, 141 of a hook assembly which can be engaged around pipes, in particular stands of drill pipe. The other portion 147 of this hook assembly is pivotally mounted in the first portion and is caused to swing to engage or disengage from around the pipe by a fluid-operated spring- biassed piston 157 and piston-rod 154 positioned in the bore 115 and acting on a cam surface 152 formed on the member 147.
