Abstract

2,5-Dichlorostyrene and an unsaturated alkyd prepared from ethylene, diethylene, or dipropylene glycol or 2-ethyl hexanediol-1,3 and maleic, fumaric or itaconic acid and tetrachlorophthalic acid or anhydride are copolymerized by heat, actinic light or a peroxide, e.g. benzoyl peroxide. Plasticizers, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, and hydroquinone may be added. In preparing the alkyds the unsaturated acids may be partially replaced by acetic, propionic, butyric, hexoic, lauric, myristic, palmitic or stearic acid and methyl, ethyl, butyl, hexyl, capryl, or lauryl alcohol or multihydric alcohols may be present. In examples, alkyds are prepared by heating maleic acid with ethylene or di-ethylene glycol, tetrachlorophthalic acid and hydroquinone. Paper, cloth or glass cloth may be impregnated with the liquid mixture and then cured to form laminates.
