Abstract

706,096. Compound sheet materials. BADER, E., and PARKYN, B. Oct. 10, 1951 [Aug. 4, 1950], No. 19562/50. Class 140 Laminated, resin-bonded, sheets or articles are made by assembling dry layers of porous or fibrous reinforcing material between moulds or cauls in a substantially airtight system, sucking up liquid unsaturated polyester resin into the space between the moulds or cauls thus impregnating the reinforcing material, and allowing the resin to polymerise. The application of the vacuum may cause the moulds or cauls to apply pressure. Curved articles may be made by laying the reinforcing material on the surface of a solid or hollow male mould A the base of which is completely surrounded by a trough E. A female mould B having a lower flanged edge which fits into the trough E, and provided with one or more tubes C carrying a sight glass and vacuum gauge, is laid over the reinforcing material. A cold-setting unsaturated polyester resin is poured into the trough E, vacuum is applied at C, and when the resin reaches the sight glass in tube C, the resin is allowed to polymerise. The mould can be made of cement, wood, metal, plaster of Paris, or wax, and the female mould of laminated material, metal, or rubber. The reinforcing layers may be cloth woven from cotton, sisal, hemp, silk, rayon, nylon, or glass, fabrics in which either the warp or weft is of metal, paper, or glass fibre mat, orientated or not. The resin may be derived from diallyl phthalate; a condensation product of maleic, fumaric, or itaconic acid or anhydride with glycol with or without saturated polybasic acids such as phthalic or succinic; or an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid. The resins may be mixed with polymerisable monomeric compounds such as methyl or butyl methacrylate, styrene, or vinyl acetate shortly before use. Boat hulls, radomes, boxes, flat and corrugated sheets may be made.
