Abstract

A masonry construction unit such as a cinder, slag, cement or concrete block, clay brick or unglazed tile is coated on at least one surface with a polyester resin and a filler, e.g. sand or diatomaceous earth, to which is bonded a fibrous mat, e.g. a mat of glass fibre, asbestos fibre, woven glass cloth, cotton, wool or paper, followed by a further coating of polyester resin, which may penetrate the mat and unite with the first layer. The resins used may be prepared by reacting a polyhydric alcohol such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol or propylene glycol with unsaturated dicarboxylic acids such as maleic or fumaric acid. Catalysts such as benzoyl peroxide or a mixture of 60 per cent methylethyl ketone peroxide and 40 per cent dimethyl phthalate, and accelerators such as cobalt naphthenate or stannous chloride may also be used. The resins are cured at a temperature not above 280 DEG F. The final coating may contain a pigment, and a glazed finish may be obtained by applying a smooth impervious sheet, e.g. of "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark) or of glass under pressure to the surface during curing, and afterwards peeling it off. Alternatively a rough finish may be obtained by adding a suitable filler to the final coating and omitting the glazing step.
