Abstract
649,160. Tamping-machines. BARDSLEY, N., and SUTCLIFFE SPEAKMAN & CO., Ltd. May 7, 1948, No. 12678. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] The tamping hammer is raised by cams, and a toggle link system is provided by means of which the hammer can be raised and held in an inoperative system out of the orbit of the cams. Fig. 2 shows a brick-tamping machine in its normal running position. The hammer 12 is carried by a ram 11 secured to a yoke 15 and is raised by a pair of cams 19 which act on rollers 17 on the yoke. The cams are secured on a driven shaft 20 and have two portions 19A, 19B which raise the hammer and allow it to drop twice for each revolution of the cam-shaft. In order that the machine may operate, the handle 27 must be held in the " in " position shown in Fig. 2. When the tamping has been completed, the handle 27 is released, whereupon a spring 29 acting through an arm 28 rocks a toggle 30, 31 about a fulcrum 26 to position the end of the toggle link 31 beneath the yoke 15 as shown in Fig. 4. The hammer is thereby held raised in such a position that although the cams touch the rollers 17, the hammer does not drop. The toggle links 30, 31 are pivoted together at 32 and have extensions 33, 34 joined by springs 36. By pulling the handle out to the position shown in Fig. 5, the toggle is broken, moved over the dead centre and locked, the hammer being raised still further and the rollers 17 being out of the orbit of the cams.
