[Class 83 (iv)] A pedal - operated hammer for securing together wires or metal strips is in the form of pliers comprising a stationary jaw 2 and a movable jaw 3, spring means 7 for urging the jaw 3 against the jaw 2 and means worked by the pedal which forces the jaw 3 back from the jaw 2 against the action of the springs for a predetermined distance and then releases it. The pressure of the springs is varied by means of studs 6. The jaw 3 is carried. by a lever 3a which is pivoted at 4 and engages between the arms of a star -wheel 8, rotated by operation of the pedal, through a ratchetwheel 9.
